The boys love their ties for church. They have some small clip-ons, but they also regularly wear a full-sized tie of Spencer's - just tied shorter with a big knot. For some time they have been asking ms to make them neckties. A wonderful (and sometimes frustrating) thing about being a mother is that you have children who think you can make/do anything. I wanted to make the boys Easter ties when I made the girls their dresses, but only Lilia got a dress. Anne will have to wait another year - if only that short a time! (I'll be honest, she still needs a stocking!)
Early last week I ran to the fabric store for something and the boys were asking - this time - for me to make them bow ties. How hard could those be, I thought. The real ones. Not the pre-done. And I was sure there are videos showing how to tie them online - since I've never tied a bow tie in my life! So I bought some fabric - enough to make some quick, matching elastic-waist skirts for the girls (Anne's would be first this time!).
Then Saturday rolls around. One of those long call-days for Spencer. And I get ambitious. While dinner was cooking, I was pinning and cutting. While the kids were sleeping and Spencer was doing his dictations (and eating dinner), I was sewing. Then Spencer was helping me turn the ties right side out. And I proceeded to stay up way too late (it was before midnight) to finish closing up the ties.
It had been a while since having a project like that. I think I need to allow myself more days per project. The ties turned out well and the boys love them. And they look great. Now we'll see if I can ever get the skirts done for the girls. Or Anne's stocking for that matter...

Tired times
I'm not going to say I wish things were different. I know we made the decision to pursue this line of work. And I really don't wish they were different. But I am going to say it's hard. Spencer's schedule is really busy. 12- to 13-hour days in average (we are getting to the end of the month and August will bring us days of 5:30a to 6p consistently, so that will be nice - but then September will probably busier than July. But, "Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof." (New Testament, Matthew, Chapter 6) - so I'm trying not to borrow trouble!) It's really okay and we're all doing well. It's just really tiring. Especially when I've got a headache like now. And especially when we've been having 100+ degree days for some time and they're scheduled for the next 10 days. Forgive me, but i do wish that were different. We have several movie days in our near future, I think. We kicked it off with "Pirates of Penzance" after our trip to Sam's Club this morning. The kids really enjoyed it and I'm glad I finally showed it to them. I hope I hear that in the background much more.
And you know, things really are great. Just hot and tiring. But these kids are really fun.
